Paper Wing Theatre Company's next production will be 9 to 5: The Musical, running April 12 - May 11. Being a small but mighty community theatre has its benefits, but competing for first run Broadway shows such as this one can be difficult and expensive. We are looking to pay for the cost of an extremely sophisticated and complex set design and execution, including mobile pieces and special effects we've never dreamed of before. You can help make these dreams a reality!

Paper Wing wants to raise $2,000 in 45 days. This will offset the cost of the stage design and build. It will also employ a local set artist and 2 local independent construction workers, bringing money raised directly back into our community. Please consider donating to our fundraising campaign on Indiegogo.com - we have some great gifts lined up to thank you for your contribution!

Kettlebell Classes at Prime

Posted on March 11th, 2013 by Lighthouse District

Prime, located in New Monterey, invites you to join our ongoing Kettlebell Classes taught by Kari Syme on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6pm. For more information and to register, please phone us at 831-324-4993.

Let Prime introduce you to kettlebells - cannon ball shaped iron weights with handles which have been used for strength training in Eastern Europe for centuries. The off-centered weight of the kettlebell fully engages your core and involves use of your body's strength, power, and endurance. Our aim is to strengthen the core and back muscles, increase dynamic flexibility, and greatly improve stability and agility.

The annual Bunnies and Bonnets Parade in Downtown Campbell is a family and community affair held on the day before Easter following the City of Campbell's annual Easter Egg Hunt. In past years, the parade has featured marching bands, baton dancers, classic cars, bagpipers, floats, dog clubs, and other assorted things of interest that make up the Campbell area community.

The parade is now approaching its 15th anniversary and we're seeking participants to help us make this year's parade the best one yet. If your group, club, or organization would like to march/participate in this year's parade on Saturday, March 30, 2013 at 12pm, please download the 2013 Parade Application Form and return it by Wednesday, March 13, 2013.

Participation is free for the general community and $50 for commercial floats. The parade will not be judged and no prizes will be awarded. This is all just for fun!

Applications for the sixth annual Monterey County Film Commission's $2,000 scholarship for film students are now being accepted. The scholarship program was created to provide financial aid and incentive to students of film and beginning filmmakers who reside in Monterey County or are currently enrolled in a community college or university in the county. The fund was established as a permanent endowment with the Community Foundation for Monterey County. For additional information, please contact the film commission at 831-646-0910.

This quarter's edition of 831 Magazine features a nice photo of the Lighthouse District at night submitted by Sheldon Chang, the developer of LighthouseDistrict.net. You'll notice that the contents page (page 8) is a shot of Lighthouse Avenue taken from the north corner of Lighthouse and Drake, looking south. The slight distortion is created by the use of a fisheye lens on the camera.

Here's a link to the online edition of 831 Magazine and the page in question!

The New Monterey Business Association would like to remind the Lighthouse District's businesses and customers that on January 1, 2013, in accordance with the plastic and paper bag ordinance passed by Monterey City Council, the cost of paper bags in all retail facilities increased from 10 cents per bag to 25 cents per bag. Plastic bags are still banned for retail use. Please be aware that this ordinance affects retail shops but not restaurants (and all that great take-out food).

Everyone is encouraged to bring your own reusable bags to retail shops. Let's all work together to reduce, reuse, and recycle! For more information on the ordinance, please click here. You can also view the City's 3-minute video overview of the ordinance.
