The past few years as more and more people have laptops and smartphones we've been seeing more and more people come to the summer movies in Downtown Campbell with them pulled out. I'm sure this year we'll add tablet devices to the list of things people will bring with them to the movies.

To date, we haven't had a policy on use of personal electronic devices during movies. Our approach has been to only lay down rules when something gets to be a problem. It might be time to have a policy. Each year we've received more complaints from people that they're being distracted by someone in the crowd using a laptop or smart phone.

We're going to let our audience set the policy. Please vote on whether we should allow unlimited use of any electronic device, impose a complete ban, or allow limited use of smartphones for important matters. If you have anything extra to say, please post a comment with your thoughts.

The Monterey County Film Commission is pleased to announce that Joseph "Joey" Blackburn, a student at CSUMB, was named the 2012 winner of the $2,000 scholarship in the MCFC's Film Student Scholarship & Awards Program. Blackburn, originally from Paso Robles, is a Marina resident and graduating senior at CSUMB's Teledramatic Arts and Technology Department.

Blackburn will use the award to help cover production costs for his Capstone, a senior film project required as his final thesis film by CSUMB. His film, a black and white horror film entitled A Fly in the Room, was shot on 16mm film, a more expensive option. "I wanted to shoot on film for the aesthetic feel that I wanted for my movie, and filming on 16mm was an experience I wanted to have at least one time, knowing that most work opportunities will be in video," Blackburn said. "It feels very good to know that all of my efforts studying filmmaking at CSUMB have been rewarded with this scholarship, and tells me that if I continue to work hard good things will happen."

Blackburn’s film will be screened with other Capstone films on May 18 at 1pm and 6pm at CSUMB's World Theater.

Monterey Bay Aquarium is pleased to announce that, for the first time ever, we're now exhibiting a sandbar shark in our million-gallon Open Sea Exhibit. The male shark, originally from Hawaii, has been growing up behind the scenes in our Animal Research & Care Center in Marina. The new shark, which went on exhibit April 26, is 43 pounds and measures four feet, six inches.

The sandbar shark (carcharhinus plumbeus) is one of the largest coastal pelagic sharks, found worldwide in subtropical waters, and can be eight feet long. True to its name, this beautiful shark is often found in sandy or muddy areas close to land. Also known as the brown or thickskin shark, it's easily recognized by its large dorsal (top) fin. It's doing very well on exhibit! You can even check out the new shark on our live web cam!

A message from Bill Whipple, President of the New Monterey Neighborhood Association (NMNA):

Humbly, I ask you to please consider joining the NMNA's Board. Our bylaws authorize up to 11 members...and there are only 4 Board member now! The time commitment is really quite small - 1-2 hours per month for the board meeting, plus whatever time you choose to spend on what interests you.

The NMNA Board is facing some real challenges right now. Our April meeting had to be cancelled due to a lack of a quorum. Attendance by more than half of the board members is required for an official meting, and two of the four board members were unable to make the meeting.

Please consider stepping up and contributing to the community. We need you! For more information, please phone Howard Fosler at 831-649-6935 or Sharon Dwight at 831-375-0841.

In the past 6 weeks, you may have noticed some construction taking place on the sidewalk of Lighthouse Avenue in front of Scholze Park (at the corner of Lighthouse and Dickman). This was part of the first phase of the City of Monterey's streetscape project, and we're pleased to report that our ugly duckling has now turned into a beautiful swan, creating a great entryway for Scholze Park!

Cris Staedler, a Senior Principal at EMC Planning and President of the New Monterey Business Association, was kind enough to take photographs of the project for us from start to finish. You can view all of Cris's photos here.

The NMBA would like to give a special thanks to Nancy Selfridge, Doug Stafford, and Louis Marcuzzo for securing the funds, preparing the design, and implementing the project so quickly.
