Two Local Schools Seek Auction Item Donations

The New Monterey Business Association has received requests for auction donations from Lighthouse District businesses for two local schools, La Mesa Elementary and Trinity Christian High School. Please consider donating an auction item if you are able. Details are below.

La Mesa Elementary School Fundraiser, May 4
La Mesa Elementary School in Monterey is seeking auction donations for its 14th Annual Spring Auction: Salute to the Services which will take place on Friday, May 4, 2012 at the Monterey Elks Lodge. Over 85% of our 400 students are dependents of military families stationed at the Naval Post Graduate School or the Defense Language Institute, and their families frequently shop in the Lighthouse District.

With the help of our annual auction, La Mesa aims to raise $10,000 which will provide the children with music, art, and physical education throughout the year. Please consider supporting our local students through a donation of goods or services. Your donation may be tax-deductible, as we are a registered 501c3 charity; in addition, your name or business will be listed in our auction program and you will be acknowledged on our website and Facebook page. Trinity Christian High School Fundraiser, May 20
Trinity Christian High School in Monterey is seeking auction donations for its Annual Benefit Dinner and Auction, to be held on Sunday, May 20, 2012 at Embassy Suites Monterey Hotel.

The goal is to raise $50,000, which will be used toward the school's scholarship fund as well as to enhance the school's academic, athletic, and arts programs. Trinity Christian High School is a 501c3 non-profit organization, and all donations will be given a receipt for tax purposes; we will also be pleased to acknowledge your business. Monterey Budokan Martial Arts Academy's New Website

The Monterey Budokan Martial Arts Academy in the heart of the Lighthouse District is pleased to announce that we have a great new website! We invite you to check us out online and to stop by our Budokan for a visit.

Founded by Julio Toribio Kancho, Monterey Budokan Martial Arts Academy offers training in self defense and in several martial arts, focusing on the unification of body, mind, and spirit.

We offer classes for children (ages 5-7 and 8-13) in Seibukan Jujutsu, as well as a wide range of classes for teens and adults (ages 14 and up) in Seibukan Jujutsu, Enshin Itto-ryu Battojutsu, Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu - Ninjutsu, Aikido, and Action Self-Defense.

We regularly host Seibukan Jujutsu black-belt demonstrations open to the public - bring the whole family to watch!

Scholze Park Community Center in March

The Scholze Park Community Center, located in the heart of New Monterey's Lighthouse District at 280 Dickman Avenue, is busy with drop-in activities five days a week! Here's a sample for March:

Tuesdays: Income Tax Assistance (March 13 & 20, 9am-2pm; March 27, 12pm-5pm)
Wednesdays: Public Computers Available (2:30pm-4:30pm)

Fridays: Gentle Exercise (10:30am-11:30am)

Plastic Bag Ban at Retail Shops Begins July 2012

The New Monterey Business Association would like to remind the Lighthouse District's businesses and customers that Monterey City Council has voted unanimously to ban the use of plastic bags and the free distribution of paper bags at all retail establishments throughout the city beginning in July 2012. Please be aware that the ordinance affects retail shops but not restaurants.

Angela Brantley, Solid Waste Manager for the City of Monterey, reminds consumers that, "The choice is less about paper OR plastic and more about bringing your own reusable bag. Just place reusable bags in your car or near the door leading to your vehicle to remind you to take them when you shop."

Currently in Monterey, almost 3 million plastic bags and 2 million paper bags are given away each year! Let's all work together to reduce, reuse, and recycle. For more information on the new ordinance, please click here. You can also view the City's 3-minute video overview of the ordinance.

Bamboo Reef Trip to Honduras, August 17-25

Roatan is situated 35 miles off the north coast of Honduras and is a long, narrow island, 40 miles in length. The mountainous backbone is surrounded by extensive coral reefs. Fishing villages and towns dot the coastline. CoCo View Resort is located on the protected south shore of Roatan. Coral reefs are in more shallow water, and experience calmer seas than the deeper and rougher north side.

Deadline Extended for MCFC's Student Scholarship

The Monterey County Film Commission's Film Student Scholarship & Award Program has announced that it has extended the application deadline.

Applications for the fifth annual scholarship program are now being accepted until April 6, 2012. The $2,000 award winner (or two $1,000 winners, if the prize is split) will be announced on May 5. Oya Salon's Owner Becomes Lead Artistic Director of KMS

Oya Salon owner Brian Bode has recently been announced as the Lead Artistic Director for KMS, an industry leader in the hair care product and style industry. In his position, Bode will oversee product innovation, brand equity, and the creation of educational curriculum for KMS' North American Division. Bode will also work closely with KMS Global on the company's overall brand and industry presence.

In 1997, Bode opened Oya Salon in the Lighthouse District and it immediately received accolades from national publications such as Harper's Bazaar and Marie Claire.

While Oya’s reputation as a cutting edge salon has continued to grow, so has Bode's, as a nationally recognized stylist and educator. He styled at New York Fashion Week's Fall/Winter 2011 Collection for Pamela Love, Alice+Olivia and threeASFOUR, and at the recent Spring/Summer 2012 Collection for Pamela Love and Korto Momolu.

Bode’s ongoing commitment and vision at Oya Salon extends to his community as well. He and his team continue to give back through numerous charitable contributions and through their annual Breast Cancer Assistance Event and Day of Healing. To date, they have raised tens of thousands of dollars toward the financial and educational support of women with breast cancer.
