Portola Plaza Under Renovation Until September 2016

Posted on April 25th, 2016 by omba

As the Monterey Conference Center renovation continues to make great progress, Portola Hotel & Spa is thrilled to announce the start of the construction on Portola Plaza. On April 25, 2016, the City of Monterey will be replacing the Portola Plaza driveway at the main entrance to the Portola Hotel & Spa and Monterey Conference Center with an extensive remodel slated for completion in early September 2016. Designed by the world renowned architects at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the sleek design of the driveway will complement the modern architectural elements being incorporated into the Monterey Conference Center renovation.

While the driveway is in the process of being replaced, the Portola Hotel & Spa’s front entrance will be temporarily closed. Access to the Portola Hotel & Spa will be through the hotel’s parking garage, located on the right hand side of Del Monte Avenue. Our guests’ experience throughout this renovation is very important to us and we have taken extra steps to ensure a smooth arrival process for each and every one. A check-in valet will be stationed to greet and direct all arriving guests, along with a garage attendant to answer any questions.

Portola Plaza is home to a bronze statue of Gaspar de Portola, a Spanish soldier and administrator in New Spain who became the founder and first governor of Alta California, which held Monterey as its capital. The statue, donated to the City of Monterey by King Juan Carlos I of Spain to honor the bicentennial of the US, was personally dedicated by King Juan Carlos I during his trip here in 1987. In the new design of Portola Plaza, the statue will remain an integral part of the plaza and will give visitors a better opportunity to capture a fantastic photo with a piece of Monterey history.

Alvarado Street Brewery Opens New Beer Garden

Posted on April 23rd, 2016 by omba

Alvarado Street Brewery is proud to announce the opening of their new beer garden. The open air, pavilion-like structure, located outdoors behind the restaurant, features six picnic-style tables and a lounge space complete with adjoining fire pits.

“We wanted a casual space where locals and guests could come in, have a beer, and relax in an outdoor setting,” said JC Hill, Head Brewer and Co-Founder of Alvarado Street Brewery. Hill explained that part of the casual theme is the counter-service ordering process where guests can order any of the twelve beers available as well as certain restaurant menu items such as the Alvarado burger, garlic fries, or one of Chef Jeremiah Tydeman’s smoked BBQ creations such as ribs, brisket, short ribs, or pulled pork (each of which will be available on different days of the week). High demand for BBQ and limited supply will limit the BBQ menu solely to the beer garden for now.

For serving beer in the garden, Hill has selected a 16 ounce stainless steel cup as the pint vessel of choice because it protects the beer from sunlight, which can cause a reaction and lead to a “skunky” aroma (think Corona without a lime).

City of Monterey Installs Donation Meters for Homeless

Posted on April 19th, 2016 by omba

In areas with heavy foot traffic, the City of Monterey is installing five donation meters where people can drop spare change that will be collected and distributed to agencies that serve the homeless. These re-purposed parking meters are intended to give visitors and residents opportunities to help homeless people and discourage panhandling.

The meters will be installed at the following locations: Alvarado Street at the Osio Adobe, Calle Principal at the Monterey Airbus Station, Simoneau Plaza (Monterey Transit Plaza), Fisherman’s Wharf at the entrance, and Cannery Row at Bruce Ariss Way. At each location, signs will inform the public about the goals of the program to raise awareness about homelessness and ways to help.

Donations made at the meters will be added to City funding for homeless programs that provide emergency housing, food, family reunification, and other emergency services. This is a pilot program; additional locations may be added if the program is successful.
