Oya Salon owner Brian Bode has recently been announced as the Lead Artistic Director for KMS, an industry leader in the hair care product and style industry. In his position, Bode will oversee product innovation, brand equity, and the creation of educational curriculum for KMS' North American Division. Bode will also work closely with KMS Global on the company's overall brand and industry presence.

In 1997, Bode opened Oya Salon in the Lighthouse District and it immediately received accolades from national publications such as Harper's Bazaar and Marie Claire.

While Oya’s reputation as a cutting edge salon has continued to grow, so has Bode's, as a nationally recognized stylist and educator. He styled at New York Fashion Week's Fall/Winter 2011 Collection for Pamela Love, Alice+Olivia and threeASFOUR, and at the recent Spring/Summer 2012 Collection for Pamela Love and Korto Momolu.

Bode’s ongoing commitment and vision at Oya Salon extends to his community as well. He and his team continue to give back through numerous charitable contributions and through their annual Breast Cancer Assistance Event and Day of Healing. To date, they have raised tens of thousands of dollars toward the financial and educational support of women with breast cancer.

According to The Monterey Herald, the Lighthouse District's own Plato's Closet has been named the best resale clothing store on the Central Coast by KDON Radio, 102.5 FM and has been awarded KDON's Golden Record. Congratulations to Plato's Closet!

The parent volunteers of Bay View Academy are currently in the process of collecting auction items for their inaugural Spring Gala Fundraiser at the Monterey Elks Club on March 9. Bay View Academy is a non-profit charter elementary school which enrolls many children from the New Monterey neighborhood.

Please consider donating an item for the auction! By making a donation, you'll be making a tax deductible contribution that will help Bay View Academy continue to motivate and inspire local youth through the many academic programs that matter most (music, drama, physical education, and more).

Additionally, you'll benefit from exposure of your company's name to those who attend the event. Donors will be listed on the event program, and the merchandise you give will be on display during the event.

Last year an estimated $4.1 million came into the county from film productions! It's been 25 years since the Monterey County Film Commission was created by the Monterey County Board of Supervisors. But the non-profit organization’s funds from the county provide only a portion of its budget each year, so additional support from cities, grants, businesses, and individuals are critical.

For the past 21 years, the film commission's largest annual fundraiser has been a glamorous gala in a ballroom, celebrating the Academy Awards. This year the commission is doing a different fundraising appeal, inviting local residents to "Stay Home with Oscar," tuning into the February 26 broadcast on their televisions in the comfort of their own homes while still supporting the Film Commission.

Rather than incurring the costs of a gown, tuxedo, taxi, dinner tickets and silent auction items, supporters are asked to donate $100-$250 to the Film Commission, providing more direct funds to the non-profit, plus a greater tax-deductible benefit to donors.

In return, contributors can receive all sorts of fun thank-you gifts and will be entered into a drawing for a movie-themed basket of goodies including a magnum of Cima Collina wine, a two-night stay at Monterey’s Hotel Pacific, and more.

For more information on the "Stay Home with Oscar" fundraising campaign and to donate to the Monterey County Film Commission, please contact the office at 831-646-0910.

The Monterey County Film Commission's Film Student Scholarship & Award Program has just increased this year's award from $1,000 to $2,000, thanks to private donations and funding from the Monterey International Pop Festival Foundation.

Applications for the fifth annual scholarship program are being accepted until Feb. 17, 2012. The $2,000 award winner (or two $1,000 winners, if the prize is split) will be announced March 31. Eligibility information and application forms may be downloaded at MCFC's website. For more information, please contact the film commission office at 831-646-0910.
