A number of people have asked us recently about what happened to Kaleido Lamps. They were there there at the beginning of summer and by the end of July, the lights had gone out.

It happened so quickly that I didn't realize that Kaleido Lamps had left so I reached out to the owner, Tan, to ask him what he's up to. I didn't hear from him for a while, but about a month later, he wrote back saying that he just got back from a long overdue vacation. Having contacted businesses that had just closed up to ask about their future plans, it plays out like this a lot. You just know that they're not likely to get back to you anytime soon because they're re-learning what it's like to get off work and not have work follow you home on a chain attached to your ankle.

When he finally wrote back he apologized for not getting in touch with everyone that he's been friends with in the past five years of running his happy go lucky lamp store. He only had a short period of time to get everything packed up and he got really tied up moving everything to a new location... and that's the good news for those of you who are at a loss for where you can get your hands on the unique twists that Tan put into puzzle lamps. He's still selling them, but he's only selling at events and through his website, kaleidolamps.com.

The Campbell Police Foundation had its annual breakfast benefit this morning at the Home Church to raise funds for the foundation. Key members of the Downtown Campbell Business Association (DCBA) were there to support the foundation and to thank the Campbell PD for their role in making Downtown Campbell a safe and vibrant slice of the Silicon Valley community.

Also in attendance and pictured in the center was California State Assemblymember, Evan Low.

The Campbell Police Foundation is a non-profit entity that was established for the purpose of providing supplemental funding, training, and equipment for the law enforcement, crime prevention, and emergency response needs of the City of Campbell. Old Monterey Public Art Survey

Posted on October 10th, 2017 by Old Monterey District

The role of public art in a community can take on many facets. The City of Monterey Community Services Department wants to hear from you about how public art can enhance Downtown Monterey. All residents are encouraged to participate in the survey located here. Deadline is October 27, 2017.

The purpose of the Art in Downtown survey is to ask for your help to create a plan for art in Downtown Monterey. The idea is to connect a path from the Lower Presidio to the Royal Presidio Chapel on Church Street, provide outdoor public art identifying Monterey’s historic and cultural assets, and to aid point-to-point way-finding.

This project will also include a community meeting on Thursday, November 2, 2017 in the Monterey City Council Chamber (580 Pacific Street) to review the survey results. For more information, please contact Kim Bui-Burton, Community Services Director for the City of Monterey, 831-646-5601.

Rosine’s Restaurant has recently expanded our drink menu! We don’t have a full bar set up yet, but we are able to accommodate most cocktail requests. We’ve also updated our dining menu with two new burgers, new sandwich, new flatbreads, and two new salads.

And for those of you who are fans of our bountiful dessert case, we’re happy to announce that we’re now carrying special autumn desserts including pumpkin pie (subject to availability), pumpkin cheesecake, and soon…pumpkin spice cake. Come on down and get your fix at 434 Alvarado Street in Old Monterey.

A family owned and operated restaurant, Rosine’s has been a mainstay of Monterey dining since 1980, with a fine tradition of homemade food, generous servings, and award-winning desserts. Voted "Best Family Restaurant" and "Best Deserts" in Monterey County since 1992. We’re open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch, dinner and weekend brunch.

In Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Benito Counties, you can now text 911 to reach emergency responders in the tri-county area. Texting to 911 can be a benefit to those who are hearing impaired or in a situation where calling may put them at greater risk such as domestic violence, while hiding from an intruder, or in a vehicle being driven by a drunk driver.

But remember: texting 911 should be used as a last resort, as calling 911 is faster; text messages can take longer to receive and may come in out of sequence. Location accuracy isn’t always as good as calling and, if you’re roaming or the text can’t get through, it will bounce back with a message saying “call 9-1-1."

Currently there are no language translation services available; all text messages to 911 must be in English using the Latin (regular) character set. The text messages should not include acronyms, emojis, or photos and they cannot be sent as a group message.

If you are deaf, hard of hearing, or speech disabled and the service is unavailable, use a teletypewriter or TTY if available.

Thanks to the New Monterey Neighborhood Association for this information. You can receive useful tips and news like this in their monthly newsletter, sent to all dues-paying members of the NMNA. (Dues are only $10 per year!)

Throughout October, Union Yoga is hosting donation-based classes to entice you to try something new for a good cause. CampbellCon 2017 is coming soon on October 21st, but tickets are only going to be on sale until October 7th! If you're planning on attending this annual "micro con" you have until Saturday to get your tickets. It's a terrific sampling of what the big cons offer, but without the high ticket prices, parking problems, and other headaches associated with mega events. They have the same kind of special guests, cosplayers, and vendors that you'd find at a full scale Comic Con. Adult tickets are only $11 and a family pack can be purchased for just $35.

Free Flu Shots at Campbell Library

Posted on October 4th, 2017 by Campbell Library

Anyone 18 years or older may stop in for a free flu shot at the library, 1pm-3:30pm on October 5. No appointments necessary.

This is first year of an exciting new partnership. Santa Clara County Library District and Santa Clara County Public Health Department are working together to help people stay healthy during flu season. Nurses from the Public Health Department will be providing the flu shots.

Flu vaccination is recommended for everyone six months of age or older, but is particularly important for those at higher risk of severe influenza, including pregnant women, children under five years of age, adults over the age of 50, and people with certain underlying medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease, and obesity.

Pregnant women who get a flu shot not only protect themselves, but also help protect their babies in their first six months when they are still too young to be vaccinated.

For maximum protection, people should get the flu vaccine before flu season begins.

It takes about two weeks after vaccination for the antibodies that protect against the flu to develop in the body.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends getting a flu vaccine before the end of October, whenever possible.
