Now through September 2016, Youth Arts Collective (YAC) presents its annual Summer Art Show. This is a fabulous exhibit featuring all new work by YACsters, alumni, and mentors, including work made during our 24hr Artathon. It’s an awesome collection of work – the art is impressive, inspiring, quirky and fun. You don’t want to miss it!

Come by during regular YAC hours to see it: Mon-Fri, 3-7pm; Sat, 12-4pm.

In early April, the Custom House Store, located inside the Monterey's historic Custom House, celebrated our grand opening. Board members Harish Joshi, Bende Kelly, Jill Lynch, Susan Miller, and Gayle Paul acted as hosts, greeting visitors and giving out small gifts. Musical entertainment was provided by Kevin Hanstick, Terrence Farrell, and Pat Skinner; we thank them for donating their time and talent.

Our new home is bright and well designed, thanks to State Parks architect Mike Zuccaro and the park maintenance staff. The lovely maple cabinets were built by River City Millwork in Sacramento. Funding for them came from a donation to State Parks from the Big Sur Half-Marathon and a grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Merchandise in the Custom House Store includes both past favorites and new additions. You’ll still find a fine selection of old-fashioned toys; marbles are a customer favorite. We have blank cards by local artists, featuring pressed flowers, wildflowers, and art from the park collection. We carry Bonny Doon soaps, salves, and essential oils. Papel picado garlands and Chinese tea bricks like those on display in the museum portion of the Custom House are available for purchase. Postcards and magnets with images of historic buildings are popular tourist items. There’s not room to list everything, so you will need to visit and see for yourself.

Our continued success is dependent on the generosity of our volunteer storekeepers, and we always need more. We welcome new storekeepers! If you would like to join us, please contact State Park Interpreter Michael Green by phone at 831-649-7172.

CFMC Creates Soberanes Fire Fund

Posted on August 1st, 2016 by lighthouseave

The Community Foundation for Monterey County (CFMC) has created the Soberanes Fire Fund to assist the affected communities in recovery efforts from the Soberanes Fire which began July 22, 2016.

The CFMC has waived all administrative fees so 100% of donations will be used for grantmaking. The funds will be used to make grants to nonprofits and organizations directly assisting individuals to meet needs as they arise. We are working in close partnership with the Coast Property Owners Association to deploy resources where they are most needed.

Grants will be made to agencies providing emergency assistance, health and human services, short term housing/rental assistance, and other immediate relief or long-term recovery support for the affected residents.

The fund will provide a trusted repository for philanthropic assets to be directed specifically for this purpose. For more information, call 831-375-9712 or visit www.cfmco.org/soberanesfire.

Soberanes Fire: Want to Donate or Volunteer? Need Help?

Posted on August 1st, 2016 by lighthouseave

In partnership with the Monterey County Emergency Operation Services, the Monterey County Community Foundation, CERV, and MontereyCERT has launched Monterey Recovers, a site that safely connects victim's needs to donations.

It's easy! We have volunteers that vet and connect victims needs to services and goods. We have several incoming donations of food, services, large animal housing, etc. The biggest need right now is housing for displaced victims. We are sure that request will expand as time goes on. Please consider sharing in this time of need - through the website, people can donate safely and request safely.

Bay of Pines is a family-friendly organic restaurant with activities for the kids! We invite you and your spouse to have a peaceful meal downstairs while your kids eat and participate in fun activities upstairs with tutors/teachers. It’s perfect for date night, and it’s all in one place!

Children’s activities include treasure hunts, art projects, puppet shows, reading books, and watching movies. This special service is only available by reservation at lunch and dinner service during our regular hours. Please call the restaurant to make your reservation, 831-920-3560.
