Community spirit is alive and well in Monterey as a range of local businesses joined the Lighthouse District’s own Carpets & Floors, Inc. in supporting the YWCA Victims of Family Violence Clinic, a non-profit organization that offers legal, social, and personal counseling as well as shelter for women and children trying to escape from abusive family situations. Several thousand dollars in goods and services were donated to execute the design makeover for the YWCA lobby.

Led by Monterey designer Michelle Pheasant Angelo of Michelle Pheasant Designs, a complete transformation of the lobby took place over two weekends. The makeover included redoing lighting, painting, putting down carpet, replacing old tattered furniture with new furniture, providing artwork, and creating a children’s play center.

The YWCA’s Victims of Family Violence program helps women and their children to walk away from abuse and develop a new life. One of the great needs of these women is to gain a sense of dignity and empowerment. The goal of the clinic makeover was to convey the feeling the moment you walk through the door that this is a refuge where you will be treated with respect.

The makeover, which occurred in February 2016, will be celebrated at a reception on Thursday, March 24, 6pm-7:30pm at Carpets & Floors, Inc. All are welcome to attend. National celebrity designer and spokesperson for Design for a Difference, Mark Brunetz, will be on hand and will talk about how design can effect change in behavior. Krista Hanni, Board Chair of the YWCA also will be on hand to explain the YWCA’s work. For more information, please call 831-372-2300.

Stepping up to join Carpets & Floors, Inc. and Michelle Pheasant Designs in fulfilling the makeover are local businesses Michael Friday- Handcrafted Finishes (paint and painters), Sal Hernandez (carpet installation), Scott Sloop, (ceiling light installation), Loyd Busby (lamps), Global Custom Frames (framing materials, labor, and installation), TomKat (fabric protection services), Tracey Adams (artwork), and Legacy Furniture (furniture).

Goodbye Rendezvous, Hello The Vesper!

Posted on March 7th, 2016 by The Vesper

A few weeks ago, the Rendezvous Wine Bar abruptly closed and immediately began remodeling. We got email from people asking, "WHAT HAPPENED?"

Well, here it is from the horse's mouth. The Rendezvous didn't exactly go away. It just changed a bit. It's now going to be known as The Vesper, an American craft cocktail bar focused on artisan cocktails and delicious food. If you have gift certificates from the Rendezvous, they'll be good at The Vesper.

Manuel Ortega Now Offering Photography Mentoring Sessions

Posted on March 5th, 2016 by ManuelOrtega

Do you want to take your photography to the next level? Are you a new photographer looking to save yourself years of trial and error? The Lighthouse District's own Manuel Ortega, of Manuel Ortega Photography, is now offering one-on-one mentoring sessions to photographers from outside the area! The goal of the one-on-one mentoring session is to answer specific questions or provide answers to specific challenges you are facing as a photographer.

Possible topics to cover include aspects of flash and digital photography such as: camera and flash essentials, exposure metering, basic lighting, lighting formals (for wedding photographers), outdoor ambient lighting (including off camera flash for dramatic photos that make a statement). Other possible topics include: basic camera operations and settings, workflow, taking better photos through better composition, Lightroom and Photoshop, and album design.

Charge is $1000 for a full day (about 7 hours). Manuel Ortega will also travel at his full day price of $1000 plus travel cost.

Photographers are encouraged to bring in images (either on a USB drive or on a laptop) that might provide insight into their needs. Manuel is committed to critiquing your work in a positive way. Having this information will also allow him to personalize the tutoring session to make the most of the time available.
