Have You Seen "Brown Dog?"

Posted on December 27th, 2015 by sheldon

Attention patrons of Downtown Campbell. We need your help in finding a lost friend. A little girl was accidentally separated from her best friend, “Brown Dog”, on 12/26/15 while enjoying a pastry in Downtown Campbell. The last known location of Brown Dog was at La PanotiQ French Bakery. He was last seen wearing grey overalls with a red heart and a brown cap and he also goes by the name “Lovie”. Anyone with information that may lead to the recovery of Brown Dog should email the office of missing stuffed animals at info@downtowncampbell.com. Reward of $1,000,000 or the eternal gratitude of a little girl, whichever is the latter.

Looking for a Home for Frontier Village Building Replicas

Posted on December 9th, 2015 by sheldon

Well, this doesn't have much to do with Downtown Campbell, but I'm hoping that someone out there might be able to help or know someone who might be able to keep a little bit of local history from vanishing again. You may have heard of a Campbell fella named Shaughnessy McGeehee who's spent the past 20 years rebuilding a miniature version of Frontier Village.

His tribute to Frontier Village includes tiny versions of key buildings like the school house, general store, and saloon. They're going to be demolished at the end of January unless someone can rescue them and give them a home. I've attached some photos of some of the buldings. I think there are a few more and as of yesterday, none of them had a home yet.

With the exception of the schoolhouse, the footprint of each mini building is about the size of a large walk-in closet and the usable space inside that being a little bit bigger than your average bedroom closet.

You can find out more about these buildings here:

Life is pretty good in Downtown Campbell these days, but you don't have to go back very far to run into the times when our small, but smiling district was in a perpetual state of being up and coming. There are only a handful of people left over from those difficult years who know this part of Downtown Campbell's history by heart.

Judy Aagard was one of those people. She contributed time, money, and effort to all sorts of things that might help Downtown Campbell be a more vibrant place to live, work, and be. She did it even when it seemed like it would be all for nothing and she did it even though many of the efforts would do little for her own business.

Even when she became ill, she would be first to express concern over how YOU were doing. That was the kind of person she was and just about everyone who's been in Downtown Campbell a while has had a chance to experience this for themselves. It's hard not to be moved when you encounter a person with Judy's warmth and spirit. Her passing is hard to fathom for the Downtown Campbell family. We've lost a special person. We're gonna miss her.

If you would like to learn more about Judy, the Tiny Tots website posted an endearing tribute.

Exciting Upgrades at the Portola - December 2015

Posted on December 8th, 2015 by omba

The Portola Hotel & Spa is full of exciting changes as we close out 2015 and venture into 2016. The first project we are working on is the enhancement to all our guestrooms with a full bathroom remodel. This bathroom renovation is in its final stages of completion with 265 guestrooms already completed. We plan to finish an additional 94 bathrooms in early February 2016 and the final 20 will be completed by May 2016.

This full remodel includes several “green” features, as well as modern updates with a nautical feel to align with the atmosphere of the guestrooms. The renovation includes: taking down the bathrooms to the original framework and entirely re-building with a crisp new look, new features, and amenities. And as you can see from the photo, they tie in beautifully with the existing décor of our nautically inspired guestrooms.

Additionally, a significant amount of the construction waste has been, and will continue to be, recycled. As part of our mission, we strive to be the premier environmentally-friendly hotel property on the Central Coast of California; part of protecting the environment through practicing green initiatives includes providing a better guestroom environment for our guests. Environmentally friendly upgrades include: LED and compact fluorescent lighting, low flow sink faucet and shower heads, high efficiency toilets, and low VOC paints.

We'd like to shine a light on Recycle Bookstore in Downtown Campbell this week. If you've got a book lover or a child on your holiday shopping list, check them out. You probably already know that they're the first place you should have in mind when looking for a used book in the South Bay, but they also have some new titles too. Their selection of new books specifically feature childrens' books, best sellers, and the kind of books that would go well on a coffee table. You know, "gifty" sort of books.

As an extra bonus, you can say hello to the always fabulous Bob Newhart Cat whenever you go visit.
