Green Chalk Contemporary: Work by Sharron Antholt & Rob Barnard

Posted on September 22nd, 2014 by lighthouseave

Green Chalk Contemporary, located at 616 Lighthouse Avenue in Monterey, is proud to present two simultaneous exhibitions, September 17 - November 30: one by ceramicist Rob Barnard, and one by artist Sharron Antholt.

Sharron Antholt references architectural and sculptural shapes from India in her new work, particularly from her recent stay in Tamil Nadu, in South India in 2013. By reducing images of fortresses, temples, and sculptural forms to flat shapes, Antholt attempts to find the essence of these forms. It becomes like a map, which in its flattened state allows us to grasp something too large to comprehend. In these new works on paper and canvas, Antholt refers to what she calls "a feeling of condensed or collapsed time which powerfully permeates everyday life in India; the sensation of thousands of years existing in a single moment."

Rob Barnard, a pioneer of unglazed wood-fired work in the US, is a seminal figure in American ceramic art. In the three and a half decades since he trained under the renowned ceramic artist Kazuo Yagi at the prestigious Kyoto University for the Fine Arts, he has had solo exhibitions throughout the US and in Japan, Great Britain, and the Netherlands.

Green Chalk Contemporary art gallery is open Tuesday - Saturday, 2pm-7pm and by appointment. For more information, please phone Ami-Sue Lawless at 831-601-0534.

Photographs by Susan Theodore at Monterey Conference Center

Posted on September 16th, 2014 by omba

The City of Monterey, Colton Hall Museum & Cultural Arts Commission, and the Monterey Conference Center are pleased to announce the Alvarado Gallery exhibit: Along the Way, Photographs by Susan Theodore. The exhibit will be on display August 8 - October 19, 2014 in the Alvarado Gallery located at the Monterey Conference Center, One Portola Plaza.

Susan first created photographs in Chicago neighborhoods and lakefront, trying to make visual sense of the streets, buildings, and people she encountered. She began capturing images that resonated with her and sought to evoke memories and emotions in the viewer.

Susan moved to Monterey in 2003 and was enchanted by the great visual contrast to Chicago. She explored the historic missions and adobes, private homes and military installations, fishing boats, wharf activity, and sea coast that seemed so foreign to her. She worked to make photographs that gave each viewer a sense of what she saw, offering them an opportunity to enter into a photograph from their individual perspectives. Her work became more abstract as she attempted to distill the urban landscape into core emotional components.

This exhibit offers images of Monterey she made over the past six years. Her work can be viewed online at photographsbysusantheodore.com.

Decorate a Room in Campbell's Ainsley House for the Holidays!

Posted on September 11th, 2014 by DCBA

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the popular "Holidays at the Ainsley House." Each year, businesses and organizations decorate rooms in Campbell's 1925 Ainsley House around a particular theme.

This year, you are invited to help us celebrate the holidays by decorating an Ainsley House room in a theme inspired by the 1920s and 30s. Hurry, only three rooms remain available: the guest bedroom and dressing room, Mrs. Ainsley's dressing room and bathroom, and the half-bath in the foyer.

There is no cost to participate. The museum provides a pre-lit tree for each room (minus the half-bath), and in-room signage to recognize each business/organization who decorated. Each business/organization also gets a half-page ad in the holiday program and exposure through the Museum's media outreach.

Please contact Anna Rosenbluth at annar@cityofcampbell.com for decorating guidelines and more information.
