Do you live in New Monterey? The New Monterey Neighborhood Association wants you! We're currently short of manpower to fulfill a number of roles in our organization, and we're looking for volunteers and board members. People interested in assisting with our mission could help with things like monitoring a committee or preparing the monthly newsletter.

We all need to work together to make our neighborhood a better place to live! Those interested should contact board president Howard Fosler at 831-649-6935.

The Movies in the Park screening of Pixar's "Up" on Saturday, August 13 was a huge success! Drawing approximately 150 people to Scholze Park, it was our largest audience to date, and everyone seemed to be having a good time. The New Monterey Business Association would like to thank all the volunteers and sponsors who made the event possible!

To view the photos taken on August 13, please click here. And be sure to join us again on September 10 for our next movie, Indiana Jones & the Temple of Doom.

On The Beach is pleased to announce that the City of Marina / On The Beach / Drawn Skate Team competed against some of the best skaters from around the country in August at the 2011 State Games of America in San Diego. As a result of the high individual medal placement of the team at the games, the team was awarded the Gold Medal and these athletes are the new 2011 State Games of America National Junior Olympic Skateboarding Champions! Congratulations!!!

The Lighthouse District's own Monterey County Film Commission is pleased to announce that Dominic Parisi, a student at California State University, Monterey Bay, was named the 2011 winner of a $1,000 scholarship in our Film Student Scholarship & Awards Program.

Parisi is a Marina resident who will be a senior this fall in the CSUMB Teledramatic Arts and Technology Department. Parisi plans to use the award to help cover costs anticipated for his "capstone" film production, a creative project the university requires of seniors to demonstrate what they have learned.

"Winning this scholarship will really take a big load off my shoulders, covering certain production costs and allowing me to purchase a specialized camera that will enable more creative shots and insights for my film," Parisi said. "I strive to inspire social progression through my filmmaking, and in the future I would like to have a career in editing."

The 2011 scholarship was funded through individual donations and by this year’s business sponsor Alan Vasquez, the owner of Alternative Visual Artists Group. Contributions to next year's Film Student Scholarship & Awards Program are welcome. For more information please phone call 831-646-0910.

On The Beach asks you to help send our very own Minors Riptide Softball Champions to San Diego!

The Riptide Softball Team, of Pacific Grove Pony Baseball & Softball, took second place at the Annual ASA NorCal Tournament at Twin Creeks, earning these young ladies the opportunity to advance to the state games in San Diego in August. In order to make it possible for the team to travel to the five-day competition, assistance is needed from our community.

You may have already spotted these motivated athletes selling baked goods at different locations in town to raise funds. The girls' philosophy is that every dollar earned by their efforts brings them one step closer to proudly representing our community at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego.

Donations to this worthy effort can be made online at the website of Pacific Grove Pony Baseball & Softball, an organization which serves Pacific Grove and neighboring cities. If you prefer to donate by check please make checks payable to "PG Pony Softball Fundraiser" and mail to: PG Pony, 310 Monterey St, Pacific Grove, California, 93950 .

Go Riptide!
