New Wellness Center at Spa on the Plaza

Posted on September 17th, 2019 by SpaOnThePlaza

There is a big difference between superficial beauty and beauty from the inside out. We know this intuitively but our culture celebrates the young and beautiful which can make us feel inadequate. At Spa on the Plaza in Downtown Old Monterey, we understand true beauty is seen in the serenity of expression and in the clarity of one’s eyes. Beauty is a state of mind and not the standard reflected by the photoshopped models we see on the cover of magazines.

This sentiment is the underlying principle of Spa on the Plaza’s mission statement: “At Spa on the Plaza, we understand that your spa experience should nurture on many levels.”

Although these words may seem simple, they are implying that healing and well being happen on multiple dimensions. It is not just about an excellent massage or expensive potions, it is about the genuine smile of our employees, the beautiful and serene ambiance, the impeccable housekeeping, the relaxing music, and the delectable scent of essential oils wafting through the air.

We recently took this concept further; in January 2019 we opened the Wellness Center at Spa on the Plaza. We now offer women's workshops and detox programs because if one wants beauty from the inside out we need to pay attention to what we eat, what we do, what we think, and who we spend our time with. We invite you to view our Wellness Center Calendar on our website and encourage you to sign up early for these exciting workshops.

Spa on the Plaza is located at 201 Alvarado Street in Monterey. Join us for new beginnings and new friendships!

Signature Handcrafted Linen Wear at Lilify

Posted on September 16th, 2019 by Lilify

When Lilify creates our signature line of linen wear, we incorporate our belief in ethical best practices, our respect for fine fiber, and our love of silhouettes that are simultaneously relevant and timeless.

Our pieces are made out of 100% fine European sourced linen. Linen is a textile made from the fibers of flax. It is beloved for being a strong, absorbent and exquisite natural fabric. The quality and weight of the textile allows for garments that offer both a flattering drape and a lithe movement.

Our pieces are hand sewn locally by a team of three talented, dedicated garment makers. Colleen, Sarah, and Erin have been sewing their entire lives and approach their skill with passion and an artful care. We have an abundant stock of our styles, in many shades, available in the shop, located at 281 Lighthouse Avenue in Monterey. In addition, we are able to have any piece, in any available color, constructed with a 2-3 week lead time. (We offer free shipping.)

Lilify designs our pieces to be classically elegant and informed by modern lines - refined and easy to wear. Our pieces are designed to make you feel the most "you" in all your endeavors – chic, straightforward, sophisticated, yet understated. We invite you to explore our collection on our website.

The next featured Landmark home is the J.C. Ainsley House (No. 2) at 112 N. Second Street. This classic Queen Anne Victorian Style house was built before 1900. It once stood at the site of the Ainsley Cannery on N. Harrison Avenue. When the cannery needed to expand in 1919, the house was moved by a capstan arrangement using a horse for power to its current location. It was moved a block at time in this manner. It moved south on Harrison to Campbell Avenue then to Second Street. This was the Ainsley’s second home in Campbell. It became their son Gordon Ainsley’s home in 1924, when J.C. Ainsley’s third and final home was finished on the corner of Bascom and Hamilton Ave.

This house is defined by its projecting second story gables and extensive entrance porch on the first floor that wraps itself around the corner of the house. It is embellished with a few decorative elements such as its horizontal shiplap siding, French doors, brick chimney and symmetrical placing of windows. It is a fine example of the Queen Anne Style, showcasing good design, composition and craftsmanship, and it retains most all of its original materials and design features.

In 1964, Thomas and Audrey Tuttle purchased the house from Mrs. Alice Cowdrey, an active member of the Campbell Methodist Episcopal Church in Downtown Campbell.

At that time, four bedrooms on the second floor of the house had been transformed into a separate apartment with its own bath, kitchen and back stairs entry. The Tuttles were raising ten children and quickly returned the apartment to its original design. All of their children went on to graduate from Campbell High School. Now in her 90’s, Mrs. Tuttle still lives in this wonderful house.

Morsels: Nancy Dean's
by Raul Nava
Monterey County Weekly, 08/27/19

Lilify invites you to explore our first signature ceramic collection created in collaboration with Alex Marshall Studios, RITUAL: gloss black and matte white handcrafted drinking vessels.

The Lilify x Alex Marshall RITUAL collection is in homage to our habitual mini moments – turning our day-to-day routines into a rite. Waking up to bright espresso, stopping mid-morning for a spot of tea, returning home after a hectic day to a bracing cocktail, sitting down with a beloved book and a soothing chalice of cabernet - the familiar and frequent traditions that allow each of us to brake and to just be.

Alex Marshall Studios is based out of Chico, California. Alex is the artist and her husband, Andrew, is the business manager. The team creates ceramics that are conceptual and connecting, organic yet modern, stunning as well as utilitarian.

We love watching people fall in love with Alex’s work, just like we did. Visit us and view these beautiful pieces in person at 281 Lighthouse Avenue in Monterey.
