The Historic Garden League of Monterey presents a free lecture entitled Elderberries: Yesterday and Today by Linda Yamane, Ohlone scholar and basket weaver, and Katie Reneker, founder of Carmel Berry Company. Seating is limited - please register by email.

In this lecture, Linda Yamane will take attendees back thousands of years where they will learn about the Ohlone culture, then talk about the traditional importance this native plant still has today, and Carmel Valley artisan Katie Reneker will connect Linda’s story to the elderberry’s rebirth today.

About Our Speakers
Linda Yamane, a Seaside resident, traces her heritage to the native Rumsien (Ohlone) people indigenous to the Monterey area. For thirty-plus years, she has been reviving Ohlone basketry, songs, language, stories, plant uses, and other cultural traditions.

Katie Reneker, a Carmel Valley resident, co-founded Carmel Berry Company in 2015. Now with the help of small organic farmers Katie creates elderberry syrup and elderflower cordial and does her best to learn and share everything she can about this noble plant that Hippocrates declared his "medicine chest."
