Sailing Yacht "Maiden" Visits Monterey & Offers Public Tours

This event has already passed

The sailing vessel Maiden and its all-female crew is visiting Monterey on Thursday, October 10 through Saturday, October 12 on the guest dock at the end of Old Fisherman's Wharf (California Dock) as part of Maiden's California tour.

Residents are invited greet the ship and crew when Maiden arrives on Thursday, October 10 sometime between 11am and 12pm. Then, the yacht will be open for public educational tours for kids and adults on Friday, October 11 from 11am until at least 3pm (Skipper Wendy Tuck will be the host). Maiden will depart for Santa Barbara on Saturday, October 12 at 12pm.

In 1989-90, Maiden competed in the Whitbread Round the World Race with an all-female crew (the first of its kind in the competition). Sony Pictures recently released a full-length documentary film, Maiden, telling the story of the then 26-year-old Captain Tracy Edwards and the incredible journey by her and her crew. Years after the race, Maiden was found abandoned and rotting in the Seychelles. Captain Edwards worked tirelessly to return Maiden back to the UK; the boat has since undergone an extensive refit and been restored to her former glory. Now, Maiden is sailing again on a new mission: to raise awareness and funds for girls’ education around the globe.

The project sees the iconic yacht circumnavigating the globe on a two and a half year worldwide tour across 30 destinations, covering over 60,000 nautical miles. Maiden left the UK in November 2018 and has subsequently stopped over in Sri Lanka, Fremantle, Sydney, Auckland, Honolulu, Vancouver, Seattle, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.

Maiden is sailed by an all-female crew again and currently skippered by Wendy Tuck (Australia), the first female skipper to win a round-the-world yacht race, winning the Clipper Race last year. Other permanent crew members include Belinda Henry (Australia), Amalia Infante (Spain), Courtney Koos (USA), and Erica Lush (USA).
