Celebrate Women's History Month at Monterey State Historic Park! Join Wendy Van Wyck Good for a free talk entitled Modernist Women: The Bruton Sisters and the 1920s Monterey Art Scene on Saturday, March 7, 2pm-3pm at California's First Theatre.
The 1920s has been called a golden era of Monterey. Come and learn about the Bruton sisters, dazzling artists who pushed boundaries and built community in Monterey 100 years ago.
About the Bruton Sisters
Educated at art schools in New York and Paris, the Brutons ran in elite artistic circles and often found themselves in the company of luminaries including Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Henri Matisse, Armin Hansen, Maynard Dixon, Imogen Cunningham, and Ansel Adams. Their contemporaries described the sisters as geniuses, for they were bold experimenters who excelled in a wide variety of mediums and styles.
Although celebrated for their achievements during the 1920s and 1930s, the Brutons cared little about fame, failing to promote themselves or their work. Over time, they and their impressive art careers were nearly forgotten.
