In celebration of what would have been the 150th birthday of illustrator Jo Mora, the Monterey History and Art Museum at Stanton Center will host an exhibition of photographs of Jo Mora and his family taken 1920-1947 by noted local photographer Lewis Josselyn. The exhibit will run October through December, 2026.

About the Photos

As neighbors and friends, the Josselyn and Mora families rarely missed an opportunity to spend time together. It would not be inaccurate to describe Josselyn as Mora’s personal photographer from the time the artist moved to the Monterey Peninsula in 1920.

About the Exhibit

The exhibit, entitled Jo Mora & Family Through the Lens of Lewis Josselyn, will be on display from September 26 through the end of 2026 at the Monterey History and Art Museum at Stanton Center, located at 5 Custom House Plaza in Downtown Monterey.

Curated by Peter Hiller, the exhibit will feature photos by Lewis Josselyn selected from the Pat Hathaway Collection at the Monterey County Historical Society and the Jo Mora Collection of the Monterey History and Art Association.

About Jo Mora

Jo Mora was born in Uruguay in 1876, moved to the eastern United States when he was a young child. After attending art school and working as an illustrator and cartoonist in the Boston area, he spent the rest of his adult life living and working in the western United States, the last 27 years of which were spent in Carmel and Pebble Beach, California.
