Green Chalk Opening Reception for "Waterstories" and "Independent Presence"
This event has already passed
Green Chalk Contemporary is pleased to present two concurrent exhibitions: Waterstories, an exhibit of mixed media artwork by Susan Hyde Greene, and Independent Presence, a photographic exhibit by Martha Casanave, Susan Hyde-Greene, Jane Olin, Anna Rheim, Robin V. Robinson, and Robin Ward. Everyone is invited to an opening reception at the gallery on Saturday, June 13, 5pm-8pm.
In Waterstories, Susan Hyde Greene celebrates her lifelong affinity with the emotional and transformative quality of water and the realization that these magical bodies are ultimately endangered. Inspired by a family culture of mending and sewing common to people all over the world, Greene sews through each piece stitch by tiny stitch, as though she can save these life-giving bodies of water by carefully piecing and stitching them together. Combining imaginary imagery with images that she photographs or re-photographs, she binds each piece together with stitching, graphite, paint, and sometimes language.
Independent Presence celebrates the photographic work of six artists - Martha Casanave, Susan Hyde-Greene, Jane Olin, Anna Rheim Robin V. Robinson and Robin Ward - who have extracted themselves from the embrace of two historical photographic traditions that have become oppressive (West Coast landscape photography and conceptual photography), thereby freeing their intuitions to guide them towards the work they truly need to do. This is creative photography expressing mystery, nature, and narrative themes which is grounded in the history of photography, from pin-hole cameras and darkroom alchemy to digital composites.
Green Chalk Contemporary art gallery is open Tuesday - Saturday, 1:30pm-6pm and by appointment. For more information, please phone Gail Enns at 831-718-7232.
