Sammy Roye and Jack Hanson formed the Santa Cruz Beach Cowboys in 1998.
Sammy plays the bass and sings lead. He started his musical career during high school in the Palo Alto area, and his first bass lesson was from a guy named Jerry Garcia. Sammy’s high school band was signed by Columbia Records and played with San Francisco area bands such as Santana, Quick Silver Messenger, Lydia Pense, Tower of Power, Sly Stone, Credence Clearwater, Stevie Nicks, and Janice Joplin’s Big Brother.

Jack is the guitarist and also sings lead. His influences range from Wes Montgomery and Miles Davis to Jeff Beck. He's regarded as one of the most creative and original guitarists of the area. Drummers Don Rutter and Dave Price provide the kick and backbeat. Blaine Deaton and John Tindle work the keyboards and sing, while Tim Floyd on pedal steel guitar gives the band a tropical flair, and two gifted saxophone players, Jimmy Hannibal and Tamas Marius, bring the house down every time they play.
