Peter Broucke, Director of Art at Middlebury College, will present a lecture entitled Institutional (Art) History at Monterey: The “Spanish Lady” Painting and the Fight Against Communism on Tuesday, February 26, 6pm-7:30pm at Irvine Auditorium in the McCone Building at MIIS. A reception will follow the lecture. This event is free and open to the public.

Broucke will discuss "The Spanish Lady," the work by Ignacio Zuloago (1870-1945) that resides in the Lara Soto Adobe. Zuloaga's nationalistic politics aligned with his art. The path that brought the painting from pre-WWII Spain to Monterey, California, went by way of Claude Kinnoull, a British countess who played a key role in the founding of the Monterey Institute of Foreign Studies (now the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey) at the height of the Cold War.
