Green Chalk Contemporary in Monterey's Lighthouse District is proud to present two concurrent exhibitions, May 9 - June 4: Brain Heads by Katherine Sherwood and Signs by Indira Martina Morre.

Katherine Sherwood: Brain Heads
Katherine Sherwood, a winner of a Guggenheim Fellowship and a participant in the 2000 Whitney Biennial, creates mixed-media paintings investigating essential aspects of art, medicine, and disabilities. Brain Heads is a series of paintings of reclining disabled female nudes modeled on iconic western paintings. Their fanciful heads, often crowned with tiaras, are composed of brain imagery from the past 500 years. Painted on the reverse of antique, linen-backed art historical prints, they feature catalog numbers and the names of canonical Western artists. The female image embodies the beauty, dignity and pride of disabled women everywhere.

Indira Martina Morre: Signs
In this series of paintings, Indira Martina Morre combines images that are suggestive of naturally occurring shapes and patterns, such as neurons and stars, with shapes generated from the artificial world of computer language, such as passwords and symbols, to create a hand-made network of a presence in time, a mark. Morre uses a gessoed surface on canvas to combine alternate layers of ink and graphite drawings within thin applications of gesso while retaining a smooth, paper-like surface. Each piece becomes a diary of daily overlapping entries, resulting in the appearance of complicated perceptual depth.

Green Chalk Contemporary art gallery is open Tuesday - Saturday, 1pm-7pm and by appointment. For more information, please phone Ami-Sue Lawless at 831-601-0534.
