Editor's Note: We don't normally publish op-eds on DowntownCampbell.com, but Dan Furtado, a former mayor of Campbell asked us to post this so we're making an exception this time.
Medical marijuana has been approved for use in California. Following guidelines established by California state law and regulations, patients may acquire and use marijuana. In Campbell, medical marijuana patients may have marijuana delivered from dispensaries established in other cities, patients may possess and use marijuana and grow up to six plants for personal use. Last November, California voters also passed Proposition 64, legalizing marijuana use for recreational purposes. Implementing regulations for recreational use of marijuana will be published in 2018, but at present, Proposition 64 allows possession and personal use of an ounce of marijuana and ability to also grow up to six plants. Additional regulations on use of medical marijuana will likewise be published in 2018.
The local initiative, Measure B, seeks to immediately allow up to 3 medical marijuana dispensaries to be established in Campbell, as well as allow for increased cultivation of medical marijuana within city limits. These dispensaries could be located near daycare centers, parks, and homes. The initiative further provides that patients could cultivate up to 100 square feet of marijuana plants without a license from the city and caregivers could cultivate up to 500 square feet of plants without a license from the city. There is no restriction placed on where cultivation can take place.
Measures C, however, provides for a more safe and reasonable approach to access and use of medical marijuana. Measure C on the ballot would impose a moratorium on marijuana dispensaries located in Campbell until April 2019. The measure would also provide that dispensaries be at least 100 feet from residential properties and 600 feet from child care facilities, schools, parks and community centers. Remember, delivery of medical marijuana is legal in Campbell under current law. Experience in other cities has demonstrated that traffic, congestion, and community disruption occur in areas close to dispensaries.
Measure A on the ballot provides for a Gross Receipts tax on marijuana businesses that might ultimately be approved in the City. Similar to other cities, the initial tax would be between 7-15% to cover increased city expenses for services, such as police, fire, and code enforcement.
Vote Yes on Measures A and C for a safe method to implement medical marijuana. Protect our children.
Vote No on Measure B, as it allows little control of dispensary location and extensive growth of marijuana plants in the city limits.

The catering driver is responsible for working well within the team, preparing/packaging catering orders to La PanotiQ standards, completing crew tasks as assigned, and delivering catering orders professionally and on time. They are also responsible for assisting in executing catering strategies and initiatives and by doing all of this, ultimately, giving our guests a reason to return to us many times.
The kitchen team member is responsible for preparing ingredients for use in recipes, and for preparing sandwiches, entrees, soups, and other menu items for our guests. The Mercury News published a nice little article about one of the members of our Downtown Campbell Business Association that's responsible for organizing many of the fun events and activities that you enjoy in Downtown Campbell. It's a special treat for us because earlier we got to honor a DCBA member of the year and one of our other members is being honored as a citizen of the year. Like, Kelly Crowley, our DCBA member of the year, Kimi has poured her heart through volunteerism into making Downtown Campbell and the Campbell area community in general a better place to live, work, and play.
Kimi has been active in the Campbell community ever since Delphi Academy moved into their space at the Campbell Community Center. She's the headmistress of the school and she's served on the committees producing the Carol of Lights, Bunnies and Bonnets Parade, and other projects the DCBA has supported. Parade entries are required to be entertaining, creative, exciting, and family-friendly (appropriate to be seen by all ages). You can participate with a float, push float, band, colorful costumes, uniformed attire, drill, dance team or comical routines, antique or unique vehicles, etc. Think outside the box!
The parade route is one mile long, beginning at the corner of Polk Street and Hartnell Street, continuing west on Alvarado Street to Del Monte Avenue to Calle Principal, ending at Jefferson Street. Anticipated attendance is 15,000 people. Parade begins at 10am on Tuesday, July 4.

Montrio Bistro is pleased to announce that longtime sous chef Bryan Copp has been promoted to chef de cuisine under the direction of executive chef Tony Baker. Copp started at Montrio in 2009 as lead cook and was promoted to sous chef in 2012. As chef de cuisine, Copp will be directly assisting Baker, who is also a partner in the restaurant.
Copp started his restaurant career at several casual dining restaurants while he attended Everett Alvarez High School in Salinas. He served an internship with chef Todd Fisher at the then-Hullabaloo Restaurant in Salinas. Over a period of four years he worked his way up to sous chef at Hullabaloo. Copp stayed with Fisher after Hullabaloo closed, assisting him in his other ventures that included catering and wine dinners as well as assisting at every Pebble Beach Food and Wine even since its inception 10 years ago.
