Monterey Hostel Seeks Volunteers

Posted on March 11th, 2026 by Monterey Hostel

Monterey Hostel, a nonprofit lodging provider located at 778 Hawthorne Street in Monterey, would welcome help from local volunteers in our garden or with building a Little Free Library for our garden. If anyone is interested or would like more information, please contact Ryan by email or call/text 831-677-6060.

Gardening and Weeding

Right now, our biggest need is help with gardening and weeding. We have four container gardens, several perimeter beds, and a large concrete planter with two California live oak trees. We need volunteers to help with weeding, planting, and generally caring for our drought-tolerant gardens. We’re also hoping to plant herbs that neighbors can share and enjoy!

Building Little Free Library

Monterey Hostel is also hoping to add a Little Free Library to our garden so neighbors can share books. If there are any community members with carpentry skills, we'd love to collaborate with a volunteer to build one. We believe we can get the materials donated. Here’s an example of a design we like.

Join the parade! Together as a community, we'll bring entertainment, excitement, and a whole lot of fun to Monterey on Independence Day.

The OMBA is now accepting applications to participate in the 2026 4th of July Parade, to be held at 10am on Saturday, July 4 in Downtown Monterey. Entries are required to be entertaining, creative, and exciting. We welcome bands, floats, drill teams, dance groups, equestrians, comical groups, etc.. Get creative and think outside the box!

Entry deadline is Friday, May 29, 2026. Fill out the parade entry form. Parade organizers will notify you via e-mail if your entry is accepted.

Join one of our fun Spring courses and get your language skills ready for summer travel! New beginner and intermediate courses available for adults and kids.

Congratulations to artist and educator Mai Ryuno, the founder of Play Full Ground, who has been awarded a Vela Grant to support her continuing work offering meaningful, creative learning experiences for youth in Monterey.

VELA is a nonprofit organization that invests in community-driven, creative education projects, trusting educators and learners to design learning that meets their communities’ needs. The VELA grant will help Mai continue to explore how art, education, and community can come together to create meaningful learning experiences.

At Play Full Ground, this work happens in collaboration with both young learners and adult community members - blending art, education, and community building. For example, Mai and Emily Gottlieb (an environmental education consultant, artist, and ecologist) are developing an Earth Day Inquiry and Ecology Workshop, to be offered this April, exploring environmental themes through creative, hands-on experiences. (Stay tuned for more info!)

Each project at Play Full Ground is an opportunity to explore how art can become a medium for learning, reflection, and connection. The studio, located at 550 Lighthouse Avenue, Suite E in Monterey, also offers after-school programs for middle school and high school students and one-on-one creative mentorship for adults.

Have you tried the warm concha treats at Scoops Ice Cream Parlor? On a cool day, come try our Hot Chocolate Filled Concha or our warm pressed Concha Ice Cream Sandwich! Our conchas (fluffy Mexican sweet breads) are all baked locally in Soledad by Jmiss Reposteria and pair perfectly with our homemade hot chocolate and Marianne's ice cream.

Warm Concha Ice Cream Sandwich

How to take the ice cream sandwich to the next level? At Scoops, we take a soft, fresh concha, fill it with your favorite Marianne’s Ice Cream and toppings, then warm-press it until it’s toasty on the outside and perfectly cold and creamy on the inside.

Hot Chocolate Filled Concha

Imagine a warm concha carved into a bowl, lined with rich Nutella, then filled with velvety hot chocolate. The Nutella melts into the cocoa and bread… and it’s topped with whipped cream and sprinkles like it just won prom king. It's honestly unfair how good it is.

Scoops Hot Chocolate

Whether it's served in a concha cup or in a regular cup, Scoops hot chocolate is made in-house with real chocolate. No powder used at all. We melt the chocolate down the right way so it’s thick, smooth, and ridiculously indulgent. This isn’t “add water and stir.” This is chocolate therapy.

About Scoops Ice Cream Parlor

Located at 595 Munras Avenue, Ste 103, in Downtown Monterey, Scoops has a large and cheerful indoor parlor where you can sit and enjoy treats in any weather. We're an independent, locally-owned shop serving legendary Marianne's Ice Cream in both traditional and creative ways. We like to have fun here!

Students looking to complete community...Read More

Take one part pop-up marketplace, neighborhood social, and small business mixer and you'll get the first Lighthouse District Meet and Greet Open House. It was our first time doing this and we couldn't be happier at how well it went on February 26, 2026. Thank you to everyone from the New Monterey neighborhood and business community who came out to join us.

On the surface, our first Meet and Greet event might seem like just a good excuse for a party, but it was intended to be more than that. You see, it's no secret that we're facing some difficult and uncertain times. More than ever, community matters.

When people come together, culture is created. When culture is created, community is the byproduct and where there's a vibrant small business scene, there are more opportunities for both culture and community to take root.

Creating more connections is how we get through hard times and build out in the good ones. We only invited people who live or work in the New Monterey neighborhood to this event because it wasn't our intent for it to be just a party. As with many of our events as a district, it was about community and always has been.
