About Old Capitol Books and Its Owners, Ali & Stephanie
In early 2017, when then owner, Matthew Sundt, announced to his staff that he wanted to sell, we (Ali Elfaki and Stephanie Spoto) knew that we had to do what we could to keep the bookstore open. To us, this bookstore represents something much more than a mere job – it is a real passion.

Ali Elfaki is a Sudanese immigrant who grew up here on the peninsula, and has been working at Old Capitol Books since 2014. He's worked to develop the bookstore into a literary and artistic fixture in the community.

Stephanie Spoto, a lecturer at CSUMB teaching literature, feminist history, and writing, has worked at Old Capitol Books since its opening in 2012.

With the help of our families, bookstore staff, and friends, we were able to pool enough money to purchase of the business. We first bonded over our love of books and literature, and many of our early days together were spent right here in the bookstore, so this place means a lot to us.

Did you know that The Perfect Crumb Bakery makes our own quiche? It's great for breakfast or dinner, and it's all made from scratch right here. Buttery, flaky, egg-filled: it's everything you want in a decadent shelter-in-place meal.

Give us a call at 831-241-6269 and order in advance for curbside pick-up. We're located at 301 Lighthouse Avenue in Monterey.

Sazón Express Cocina Mexica has recently reopened for take-out and now every day is Taco Tuesday! Enjoy traditional carne asada or Pop’s grilled lime-orange chicken tacos at Taco Tuesday prices. In addition, they're selling draft beer by Alvarado Street Brewery. It doesn't get much better than that.

Visit them at 431 Tyler Street in Downtown Old Monterey. Check out their menu, hours, and more on our website.

The Bay Area mom-and-pop shop you know and love, has finally entered into the digital world. We're adding items to our online shop every single day!

We have jewelry made in the USA, baby gifts, and loads of puzzles + games to keep you entertained. And that’s just a fraction of it. Please visit our new online store at www.therapystores.com.

As difficult as it has been for us to keep our doors open during this challenging time, those in healthcare are fighting an even bigger battle on the front lines for all of us so we're going to try to do what we can to give back to them.

This past week ending on Wednesday, April 15th, we had a "Get One Give One" special. For every pizza sold, we gave one to healthcare workers who are fighting for our communities. The program was a huge success and we'll now be donating 1,000 pizzas to our masked heroes at local hospitals around the Bay Area.

We're not done yet. Please help us keep the meals of gratitude going by donating to our GoFundMe to deliver more pizzas to healthcare workers. Every $10 donated will feed another masked hero on the front lines of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Hope you are all safe and healthy. We are still open here at The Olive Bar with CONTACT-LESS payment over the phone and FREE local deliveries also offering CURBSIDE PICK-UP at the store. We now are going beyond the Covid-19 guidelines and have purchased a steam machine to sterilize the store and products going out.

We thank you for your orders and the support.

The Olive Bar's current hours are:

  • Tuesdays and Fridays: 10am-5:00pm
  • Wednesdays and Thursdays: 10am-3:00pm
  • Saturdays: 9:00am-Noon
