Restaurant Pick-up Is the Way to Go

Posted on February 25th, 2021 by lighthouseave

Trying to decide between pick-up or delivery from your favorite restaurant? If you want to support small, locally-owned businesses, pick-up is the way to go.

Most small eateries in New Monterey's Lighthouse District are operated by the owner and (perhaps) a handful of employees. The margins are small. Delivery charges can be expensive for restaurants, so if you're able, please consider picking up your order yourself.

Don't want to wait onsite? Place your order in advance over the phone or online. Don't want to go indoors? Some restaurants offer curbside pick-up on request - they're listed in our online Dining Guide. You can enjoy great take-out food and stay safe from coronavirus!

Uncle Nearest Whiskey Now at Pearl Hour

Posted on February 24th, 2021 by Pearl Hour

Pearl Hour is proud to carry Uncle Nearest 1856 Premium Aged Whiskey and Uncle Nearest 1884 Small Batch Whiskey. Spice, maple, fruity and grassy, these are blends of premium aged whiskies between 8-14 years. Visit us at 214 Lighthouse Avenue in Monterey and try it.

In the traditionally cloistered male and white world of whiskey, Uncle Nearest is a brand that is proudly Black-owned and operated, rooted in the history of long-overlooked Black innovation in the beverage space, and, by its very existence, a refutation of the old narratives that white-washed the American whiskey industry.

Uncle Nearest is the legacy of the Godfather of Tennessee Whiskey, Nearest Green. Each small batch comes from barrels chosen by the founders and each blend is curated by a fifth generation Green descendant, Master Blender Victoria Eady Butler.

Butler is a descendant of Nathan “Nearest” Green, the man who mentored Jack Daniel in the craft of whiskey distilling. Green, who was enslaved until 1865, was a highly skilled whiskey-maker and an indispensable advisor and distiller for Jack Daniel’s.

Pearl Hour invites you to join us on Tuesday, March 2 at 7pm for a four-course tasting experience by Pearl Hour and Chef Alec Moreno. Fee is $85 per person and seating is limited - please reserve your spot online. Ages 21 and over only.

Pearl Hour has recently acquired some incredibly luscious liquids from Japan. These bottles represent our continued dedication to partner with producers who care about their craft. We will highlight these products in cocktails served alongside beautifully prepared little bites by Chef Moreno while you sit under the stars by the fire in our secret garden patio. View the menu here.

Pearl Hour is located at 214 Lighthouse Avenue in Monterey.

MIIS: A New Green Agenda in Education, March 9

Posted on February 23rd, 2021 by Middlebury Institute

Middlebury Institute for International Studies presents Dr. Christina Kwauk discussing A New Green Agenda in Education, online on Tuesday, March 9 at 12:30pm. This discussion is free and open to the public - advance registration is required.

The climate crisis does not discriminate, yet it disproportionally affects the most marginalized, vulnerable members of society, particularly girls in developing countries. The challenges of the climate crisis go well beyond reducing greenhouse gases, and require bold new ways to think, do, be, and communicate with others in the world. This presentation focuses on how education is key to strengthening our collective capacity to address and tackle two of humanity's most pressing problems: gender inequality and climate change across borders and cultures.

Christina Kwauk is a social scientist with a current interdisciplinary focus on education for climate action. She is an expert on girls’ education in developing countries, 21st century skills and youth empowerment, sport for development, and the intersections of gender, education, and climate change. Christina is a co-author (with Gene Sperling and Rebecca Winthrop) of What Works in Girls’ Education: Evidence for the World’s Best Investment, and has published numerous policy papers and academic articles on topics in climate change education, gender, health, and international development and education.
