To create the mandala paintings known as thangka, the artist must pay great attention to detail and be passionate about their work. Maybe on Monday is proud to have a few thangka available in different sizes - we buy directly from the artists themselves. If you're interested in this artwork, please contact us at the shop. We're located at 251-B Pearl Street in Old Monterey; our phone number is 831-621-0035.

The Lady Hull Spoken Word Stage will feature jugglers, comedians, improvisation, slam poets, authors, and spoken word artists throughout the weekend including Shelby Bond, Jeffrey Daymont, Heather Flescher, Patrick Golden and Beverly Van Pelt, the Seaside High School Dramatic Arts Program, Jonathan Rhome, and Wingin' It, Paper Wing's new comedy improv troupe. Paper Wing is also presenting a Take the Stage Open Mic Event on the Lady Hull Stage on Sunday, August 27, 3pm-4pm. Slots are available for 5-10 minutes each. Paper Wing is dedicated to cultivating new, inspiring work and giving spaces to artists who may not feel they have a platform to perform! Please e-mail Erin Davison to reserve a slot.

Liquid Bread Gastropub closed down recently, but don't worry, they'll be back soon after some changes and probably a new name. From the sounds of this article, it appears likely to remain some sort of gastropub. No word on the fate of the dearly missed Bearnaise Burger though.

This article in the San Jose Mercury News already made the rounds a bit recently, but it's too nice of a piece to not pass along. Dominick Guida, the owner of our own The Cruiser Shop and the organizer of the Shiny Side Up Bike Show, was featured prominently in the Mercury News recently. Indeed, his shop is a pretty big deal in a small corner of Downtown Campbell. I've met people who drove hours and bypassed other similar bike shops along the way just so they could get their their accessories and work done at the Cruiser Shop. And speaking of that Bike Show, it's already passed for this year and this year was its 10th anniversary!

In August 2017, Venture Gallery proudly presents our featured artist, Tamara Selyangina. Tamara is a Russian-born watercolor artist who grew up in Eastern Siberia near Lake Baikal and has been living in Monterey for more than ten years.

Tamara Selyangina says working in watercolor suits her personality, and she loves it because of the subtle nuances that can't be achieved in any other medium. The spontaneity, speed of execution, and happy accidents with this medium make the process magical and exciting. Being inspired by the beauty of nature, she is compelled to try to recreate it on paper. The Monterey County scenery contributes to her inexhaustible excitement and enthusiasm for painting.

The focus of Tamara's work now shown at Venture Gallery is the breathtaking coastal scenery of Monterey County, beautiful and dramatic local nature, street scenes of Monterey, and the wharfs. We invite you to visit Venture Gallery at 260 Alvarado Street (next to the Portola Hotel & Spa) and view her work and the work of other local artists. We're open seven days a week.

Old Capitol Books is changing ownership and enjoying the beautiful Monterey summer! To celebrate, we're throwing a huge sale featuring 50% off all used books, August 1-31, 2017. Come down and see what you can find! Please note: sale does not include new books, fixtures, or non-paper miscellaneous items.

We are very happy to announce that Old Capitol Books is under new ownership; it has recently been purchased by its employees, Ali Elfaki and Stephanie Spoto.

Earlier this year, when the owner Matthew Sundt announced to his staff that he wanted to sell, Stephanie and Ali knew that they had to do what they could to keep the bookstore open. To them, this bookstore represents something much more than a mere job - it is a real passion. The official transfer of ownership will be on August 1, 2017, and they're celebrating with a massive 50% off sale!

Ali Elfaki is a Sudanese immigrant who grew up here on the peninsula and has been working at Old Capitol Books since 2014. He's looking forward to helping the bookstore grow and develop into a literary and artistic fixture in the community. Stephanie Spoto has worked at Old Capitol Books since its opening in 2012 and she is very excited to be a key part of its next chapter. With the help of their families, bookstore staff, and friends, they were able to pool enough money to make the purchase of the business.

Stephanie and Ali bonded over their love of books and literature, and many of their early days together were spent right here in the bookstore, so starting this next chapter of their lives together with Old Capitol Books is more than they could have ever hoped for.

Purchasing Old Capitol Books is happening at a bitter-sweet time. They know that Logos Books in Santa Cruz is closing its doors; they've spent many hours among Logos's towering book stacks, and knowing that it is in its final days is very sad. They know that they can never replace Logos Books, but they will do their best to hold down an awesome book store for all you book lovers on the central coast.

Coastal Home Furniture Gallery is holding a back to school sale from now through August 14, 2017. Plus we carry mattresses, beanbag beds, lamps, and bunkbeds! Visit us at 465 Tyler Street in Old Monterey.
