An 1840s building constructed of redwood and adobe, California’s First Theater is one of Monterey’s most unusual historic structures. Learn about its unique architecture during this free talk, “California’s First Theater: An Idiosyncratic Treasure” by Dr. Cynthia Wagner Weick held on Saturday, October 3 at 2pm inside California's First Theater.

About the Talk

Dr. Cynthia Wagner Weick's presentation will focus on the theater’s architecture (a product of builder Jack Swan’s creative bent and European heritage), the availability of building materials in the mid-19th century, and evolving architectural styles.

Weick recently co-authored Preserving History: A Field Guide to Art and Architecture in Monterey. Copies of the book will be sold on-site and signed by Dr. Weick. Following the book signing, State Parks staff will conduct a free 15-minute tour of First Theater.

About Cynthia Wagner Weick

Dr. Cynthia Wagner Weick taught in the business and engineering schools at the University of the Pacific for 27 years. Since retiring to Carmel-by-the-Sea in 2017, she has pursued her lifelong interests in art and art history.

In addition to Preserving History: A Field Guide to Art and Architecture in Monterey, she is co-author of Preserving Nature: A Field Guide to the Art and Artists of the Monterey Bay (2019).
