Old Flags of Monterey Exhibit at Colton Hall Museum, July 2026

Colton Hall Museum presents Old Flags of Monterey, an exhibit featuring a variety of historic and replica flags July 1-31 in celebration of America 250. The Museum, located at 570 Pacific Street in Downtown Monterey, is open daily 10am-4pm, and will be open on July 4.

About the Exhibit

Included in the exhibit are several original flags that are seldom on public display: a1823-1846 original Mexican flag; a piece of the last Mexican flag flown at the Custom House before American occupation, dating from 1846; a 26-star flag flown by John C. Fremont and his regiment at Gavilan Peak / Fremont Peak prior to leading the Bear Flag Revolt; and a 31-star constellation flag recognizing California as the 31st state, dating from 1850.

Also part of the exhibit is the watercolor painting of the bear “Samson” by Charles Nahl, the basis for the current California Republic flag. Replica flags of importance in Monterey, along with the flags that the City flies at Simoneau Plaza, will be part of the exhibit.

About Colton Hall Museum

First opened as a museum in 1949 to celebrate the Centennial of the California Constitution Convention, Colton Hall Museum and Old Jail is free and open to the public daily. Private tours and school tours can be booked for a fee online.

Opening Reception

A reception will be held from 4pm-6pm on Wednesday, July 1st at Colton Hall Museum.
