Just in time for spooky season, Monterey State Historic Park presents a new exhibit at Casa Gutierrez entitled "Though Lost to Sight, In Memory Dear: An Exploration of Memento Mori and Posthumous Portraiture," opening on Friday, October 9.

About the Exhibit

This exhibit will showcase the park’s unique collection of posthumous portraits, hair wreaths, and hair jewelry that all tell the unique story of the people they belonged to. Many of these objects have never been exhibited and have come out of storage for the occasion. Together they weave a tale of family, love, loss, and societal views on death from the late colonial period through the Victorian era.

Location & Hours

Casa Gutierrez Community Art Gallery, located at 590 Calle Principal in Downtown Monterey, is open Fridays and Saturdays, 11am-4pm.

Opening Reception

A free opening reception will take place on October 8, 5pm-7pm in the gallery. All are welcome.
