Diving into Solar Power at Portola Hotel & Spa

Posted on February 29th, 2016 by omba

At Portola Hotel & Spa in Old Monterey we are constantly implementing ways for our entire hotel and spa operations to be greener and more energy efficient. Most recently, we completed the conversion of our conventional pool heating system to a solar heating system (even better, it’s made in the United States).

Now in Monterey's warmest months the pool will be solely heated by our new Suntrek solar heater. In cooler months such as April and October, 80% of the heat will be provided by the solar heater and 20% of provided by a gas heater, which will serve as a supplementary heating system during the winter months as well.

By utilizing alternative sources of energy such as solar power, we are able to save energy and greatly reduce our impact. As one of Central California’s first LEED® Certified Hotels by the U.S. Green Building Council, we truly are committed to “leeding” the way for other hotels and commercial properties throughout California and beyond.

Cha-ya Celebrates Hinamatsuri (Dolls’ Festival)

Posted on February 29th, 2016 by omba

Cha-ya Japanese Tea and Things welcomes spring with a celebration! March 3 is Hinamatsuri, a day to wish girls good health and long life. Most families with daughters celebrate by displaying hina dolls. Nowadays, it's customary to give dolls to the first born daughter. It's also customary to prepare special foods during this time of celebration.

In the same spirit of celebration, May 5 is Children’s Day, when families celebrate the healthy growth and happiness of children. It became a national holiday in 1948, but it has been a day of celebration in Japan since ancient times. The fifth day of the fifth month was traditionally called Tango no Sekku and was a festival for boys.

In honor of the season, Cha-ya has quite a large, diverse selection of dolls for sale! We invite you to stop by and take a look. These dolls are the perfect gift for a girl or boy in your life.

The Campbell Water Tower page polled the people who know Campbell the best about what they thought were really the best spots around town. Well, here are the results after a couple of weeks of voting. Naturally, Downtown Campbell snagged a few.

The people in the know have spoken. Congratulations to all the winning businesses!

Special thanks to the 10 students and faculty who spent President's Day serving lunch at the 124th Annual Early Settlers Luncheon. A successful and long-running annual civic event, only the Rose Parade surpasses it in California for longevity! We worked together with the Early Settlers committee, The Home Church and Mamma Mia's restaurant to serve the lunch before a special talk by Judge Bernal about local history.

It's not too late to pick up a treat for your sweet this Valentine's Day. We have wonderful soaps, lotions, and gift certificates they're sure to love. Pop into the shop, or buy a gift certificate online and we can send via email. https://squareup.com/market/ritual-day-spa-2/ritual-gift-certificate

Here's a view from one of the parade cars in one of the early runnings of the Bunnies and Bonnets parade in Downtown Campbell. It was taken in 2001 and was probably captured using an early digital camera/video recorder combo using floppy disks. It's really grainy, but you can get an idea of how much Downtown Campbell has changed. There's no "Schrader Building" that is currently home to The Socialight - Restaurant and the building that would open as Stoddard's Brewpub and would later become home to Campbell Brewing Company (once and then again) is still under construction. The retail block across from that building is still an empty lot.

The 8-bit version of Sally Howe walks into the video to take a photo at around 1:42.

Prime Introduces Trainer Mina Afshari

Posted on February 9th, 2016 by lighthouseave

Prime Monterey Gym is pleased to introduce our new secret weapon: trainer Mina Afshari. When she walked into Prime, we developed an instant girl-crush because she’s developed herself with integrity as a trainer and health coach and shares an intense, bad-ass approach to functional, health-first training. Mina is an ACE certified Health Coach and Personal Trainer with a passion for clean eating and building strong, beautiful bodies.

After cancer claimed her mother at a young age, Mina wandered into a spinning class and found her will to go on renewed by the intensely physical experience. It became a daily practice, and forever anchored her life as a physical person. An injury she sustained while doing Crossfit taught her that how much weight you lift, or how fast you lift it is not as important as being strong from the inside out.

Mina works with men and women who want to improve their health, recover from injury, lose weight, and gain muscle mass. She recently moved to Monterey Bay, but she’s been a sought-after trainer in the Bay Area tech community for 6 years. Happy to receive texts and calls from her clients, she wants to be as hands-on as possible so that your steady improvement is guaranteed.

Mina is excited to work with beginner to advanced clients who are ready change their bodies with exercise and nutrition. She is currently seeing clients Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays. Call Mina at 408-515-7144 for more information.
