Monterey Public Library recognizes that this is an unprecedented period for our community. Businesses are shutting their doors and signature community events have been canceled. We have also witnessed remarkable instances of connection, creativity, and solidarity as we strive to keep our Monterey communities together.

We wish to capture and preserve our community's experience during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this Together: Community Voices sets out to document our community's experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic through writing and art.

Become part of this historical record by submitting an entry to In this Together: Community Voices. Submissions can be poetry, fiction, non-fiction, memoir, reflections, photographs or artwork; all forms of expression document how we cope, survive, and live as our lives have changed. These submissions will document our experiences and will become a historical record that we will be able to look back on. Help us record this time through your personal lens.

Parents, if you're looking for a fun activity to do with your kids that has a uniquely local flair, we'd like to introduce you to the books of local children's author, Julie Dart. Downtown Campbell is her happy place and she does most of her writing in various spots in and around Downtown. In her most recent book, "The Adventures of Jimmy and his Red Jacket," Julie enshrined some of her favorite places in Campbell by featuring them as places the main character visits, but changed the names of the locations.

To give parents a distinctly local activity to do with their kids while they're sheltering at home, Julie's doing a weekly read-along of "The Adventures of Jimmy and his Red Jacket." Each week's read-along includes a mystery to solve. Kids are invited to figure out the real world names of the locations that Jimmy visits. The first ten correct answers to be submitted to Julie will receive a kid sized prize from the real location that was depicted in her book.

You might not be able to go out and roam around as you wish in Downtown Campbell right now, but with a little help from your imagination, you and your kids can still explore with Julie.

"The Adventures of Jimmy and his Red Jacket" can be purchased online through Julie Dart's website or you can just follow along online in YouTube readings that she's released.

Follow Julie's Facebook page to get the weekly location riddles to earn your chance at some tasty little prizes. They're currently on week 2 of an 11 week read along. At the very end, one lucky winner will be randomly chosen to receive their very own red jacket just like the one that Jimmy wears in the book.

Sushi Fly Reopens for Take-Out

Posted on May 13th, 2020 by Sushi Fly

The past two months have presented unparalleled challenges to our Monterey community and there will certainly be additional unforeseeable challenges as we move through the next phases in social distancing and toward a new and different "normal" in our daily lives.

Sushi Fly would like to thank our guests and employees for being so patient and for doing their part to slow the spread of Covid-19. Your loyal support of our restaurant over the past two years has been greatly appreciated.

As we look toward the future, we have been planning for a new and different reality that might include a new and more limited menu, waiters with face masks and gloves, disposable menus, and tables six feet apart,

Because we anticipate that we will have to reduce the capacity of our already small restaurant, we will be introducing to-go orders, online ordering, and curbside pick-up.

Our hours of operation will be Fridays and Saturdays starting May 15, 3pm-8pm. Please have your orders placed before 7:30pm. You can place your orders on our website.

Our staff has been extremely patient with our closing and we thank them for sticking with us during these trying times. All of us are looking forward to seeing you again.

-Mike Adams
Owner, Sushi Fly

The Monterey County Film Commission, located in the Lighthouse District, is pleased to announce that Reyna Bautista Gonzalez, a student majoring in Cinematic Arts & Technology at CSUMB, is the winner of the 2020 Monterey County Film Commission's Director Emeritus Richard Tyler Film Student Scholarship Award.

Reyna is originally from Whittier. She'll use the $2,000 award to to pay for special effects and music rights in post-production for her film short, Prism, a dark comedy in which a seemingly normal dinner party unravels into a sinister affair. She also plans to use the funds to enter the short into film festivals.

In addition, another CSUMB student, Kristin Rebozzi of Morgan Hill, received a $1,000 special award to go towards her senior thesis film to be shot later this year. She is in pre-production and plans to use Monterey County locations as she works with a student collaborator on her narrative short film.

No doubt it's been a tough couple months for many small business owners across the country, and Cat's Meow is no exception. The good news is we've begun getting product out onto the internet through Poshmark and will soon start posting more on Instagram and reaching across as many platforms as we can. We're now offering curbside pickup for all local online orders and gift certificates!

The bad news is we haven't only taken a financial hit, but also a physical hit to our storefront. Two weeks ago, a driver crashed into our display window damaging priceless pieces, compounding the anxiety of these uncertain times. The firefighters who responded to the emergency call kindly took the time and effort to board up the window, but it's looking kind of rough out front.

That said, we are keeping our head and hopes high. We have an amazing community here in Monterey, and we're so thankful for everyone who has shown up for us so far. We couldn't do it without you! Call us at 831-393-2287, visit us online, and pick up your latest Cat's Meow fashion finds at 601 Lighthouse Avenue in Monterey.

Alvarado Street Brewery and Grill is now open for walk-up, curbside service at 426 Alvarado Street in Downtown Old Monterey! Monday and Tuesday we're open for beer only, 2pm-7pm. Wednesday through Sunday, we're open 12pm-7pm with a new takeout menu posted on our website. It features burgers, daily meal specials, and cocktails, bottled wine, and beer to-go.

Abiding by social distancing regulations, we have taped off 6ft standing positions and have a one-way line system set up right on Alvarado Street. Please phone in your food orders in advance so things don't get crowded on Alvarado Street, 831-655-2337.

Come and say wassup to Wade and Dre as they are slinging all of this week’s releases as well as Anniversary Ale VI. We're pumped to be back, y’all!

The Code Ninjas Monterey center is back open to the public! Our new operating hours are Monday-Friday, 2pm-6pm, and Saturday-Sunday, 10am-2pm. We can't wait to see those award-winning smiles at 465 Pacific Street in Downtown Old Monterey.

Do your kids like computers? They'll love Code Ninjas! Our center is a fun and welcoming place where girls and boys ages 7-14 learn to code by building their very own video games. They have a blast while learning coding, robotics, math, logic, and teamwork.

Your child’s health and safety are our top priority and we're enforcing strict safety measures as advised by the CDC. Here are the steps that we’re taking to ensure a clean and safe dojo:

Cleanliness
*Increased frequency of professional cleaning
*Increased frequency of in-house cleaning by employees, especially devices, tables, door handles, bathrooms, and other frequently used surfaces
*Computer, monitor, mouse, and workspace cleaned between every student session
*No food or drink permitted in the lobby or dojo (coffee bar temporarily closed)

Social Distancing
*Increased distance between individual student workstations in the dojo
*Careful monitoring and enforcement of no-contact interactions
*Reduced student capacity in the dojo as needed, per local regulations

Personal Health & Hygiene
*Increased enforcement of hand washing and sick policies including mandatory temperature self-checks by staff
*Increased volume of sanitation stations

How many times have we heard of intermittent fasting? Despite being so popular, many of us have not yet brought up the courage to deprive ourselves from much yearned-for meal time. Boxing Strong invites you to join us for a free Intermittent Fasting Workshop led by Irina Espada on Instagram Live on Wednesday, May 20 at 6pm.

Irina Espada is a food enthusiast. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband and two kids. Irina has spent a lot of time in boxing circles. Before having kids, she was a fighter herself. And even though having kids has changed the way she practices boxing in her daily life, she still has a big love for the sport. Intermittent fasting came into her life more than 3 years ago after the birth of her daughter.
