The Campbell Historical Museum announces that Rock Bottom Brewery of Campbell's annual Fire Chief Ale Promotion, starting February 25, 2014, will raise funds for the care and conservation of over 400 fire department-related items at the Campbell Historical Museum.

The Fire Chief Ale Promotion kicks off with a keg tapping on Tuesday, February 25 at 6pm at Rock Bottom's Campbell Pruneyard location, 1875 South Bascom Ave. Fire Chief Ale, a full-bodied amber with a dry, mildly hopped finish, is one of the specialty beers brewed throughout the year by Rock Bottom Brewery. The promotion continues through March 31, 2014, with a portion of all Fire Chief Ale sales donated to the Campbell Historical Museum and the Burn Foundation. Rock Bottom will display photographs and objects from the museum for the duration of the promotion.

Of the 10,000 objects, photographs, and documents in the Campbell Historical Museum collection, over 400 are directly related to the history of Campbell's fire department and paramedics. Rescue 25, a custom 1974 Chevrolet used by Campbell's first firefighter paramedic team, was donated to the City's Historical Museum in 2009 and restored over the course of four years. In addition, the Museum owns a 1917 American-LaFrance Double Tank Chemical Car Fire Engine re-built with parts from Campbell's first fire truck. The Museum collection also includes dozens of photographs of Campbell fire fighters as well as uniforms, equipment, and other fire paraphernalia. The collection, owned by the City of Campbell, is available to researchers by appointment.

For more information about the Campbell Historical Museum and this fundraiser, please phone Julie Carpenter, Museum Specialist, at 408-866-2758.

The Downtown Campbell Business Association would like to remind customers that the City of Campbell has banned the distribution of single-use plastic bags as of January 27, 2014. Recycled-content paper bags or reusable bags may be handed out for a minimum charge of 10 cents per bag (this will increase to 25 cents on January 1, 2015).

The new ordinance does not pertain to restaurants, fast-food places, and nonprofit charitable reuse organizations such as Goodwill. The ordinance also allows retailers to provide protective bags for produce, meat, prescriptions, live fish, greeting cards, and garment bags (dry cleaning) at no charge.

We encourage everyone to bring your own bags when you shop! The City Council hopes the plastic bag ban will reduce pollution, free up landfill space, and protect our environment. For more information, please visit the City of Campbell's website.

The Lighthouse District's own Bay Physical Therapy & Fitness Center wants you to know that, as of January 1, 2014, California residents have improved access to physical therapist services thanks to Assembly Bill 1000, signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown in the fall. This "direct access" law means that many people can receive physical therapy treatment without the hassle of obtaining a referral from their doctor.

Under the previous law, patients could only be seen for an evaluation, fitness and wellness services, and treatment for a condition that had been the subject of a medical diagnosis. This new law expands patient access to physical therapy for immediate treatment for up to 45 days or 12 visits, whichever comes first.

In addition to therapy, Bay Physical Therapy & Fitness Center offers gym and fitness services at a cost of only $45 per month for unlimited use during business hours (Mon-Thur 8:30am-6pm & Fri 8:30am-4:30pm) or $5 per visit. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please phone us at 831-375-5909.

The Association of Film Commissioners International (AFCI) has announced that Karen Seppa Nordstrand, director of marketing and film production for the Monterey County Film Commission, has achieved the highest professional designation of Certified Film Commissioner. This recognition has been attained by fewer than 30 film commissioners worldwide among the 315 AFCI-member film commissions.

Nordstrand has worked for the Monterey County Film Commission for 24 years and served 4 years as executive director. She handles the marketing, advertising, communications, and production inquiries. An average of $3 million comes into Monterey County communities each year from film productions, including independent films, commercials, fashion catalogs, television shows, corporate videos, travelogues and documentaries.

"Attaining the Certified Film Commissioner status is a great accomplishment," said Kevin Clark, executive director of AFCI. "Today’s film commissioners play many roles. They are called upon to market their jurisdictions, prove their value with economic reporting, and juggle the demands of productions in an increasingly high-tech, fast-moving world."
