The parade organizers will be working with the Friends of Children with Special Needs (FCSN) Marching Band to coordinate a Twist and Shout flash mob as part of this year's parade.

If you'd like to participate, there are multiple opportunities for you to learn the dance. Practice sessions will be held at the FCSN Center in San Jose. There's also a video (below) that you can watch to learn the dance on your own.

May 1-15, 2019, the Middlebury Institute of International Studies will host the “One Trial – Four Languages” exhibition in the upstairs and downstairs lobbies of the McCone building on the MIIS campus (499 Pierce Street in Monterey). This exhibition, curated by the International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC), spotlights the men and women who interpreted at the Nuremberg Trials at the end of the Second World War.

The exhibit celebrates the lives of the disparate team of Russian émigrés, military men of letters, and concentration camp survivors who broke new ground by simultaneously interpreting the criminal proceedings at this international tribunal. This was the first time that the practice of simultaneous interpretation was used in this way in such a public arena, although today it is a familiar feature of international organizations’ deliberations. The four languages of the courtroom were English, French, German, and Russian.

In addition to perusing the inspiring biographies of these pioneering interpreters, visitors to the exhibition will be able to watch newsreels of the Nuremberg trials from the perspective of a simultaneous interpreter sitting in an industry-standard portable simultaneous interpretation booth. Rather than hearing a live speaker, as the Nuremberg interpreters did, the public will hear testimony in the four original languages, some interpreted by the very interpreters who were present at the Trials, some by the next generation of interpreters, members of AIIC.

The captivating exhibition will provide a unique opportunity for visitors to learn firsthand about this little-known and frequently misunderstood profession.

Every 10 years, the U.S. Census Bureau undertakes a massive task: counting every person living in the United States — regardless of age, citizenship status, gender, etc. Outside of voting, one of the most powerful things you can do for your community is participate in the census.

Your participation helps ensure our community receives its fair share of more than $600 billion in federal funds annually for critical programs that support education, housing, and emergency disaster relief services. Census data determines the number of U.S. representatives each state sends to Congress. It also sets the district boundaries for our congressional, state senator, assembly member, county supervisor, and city council elections.

To assist with the 2020 Census, the U.S. Census Bureau is now hiring for a variety of temporary jobs. To be eligible, you must be at least 18 years old, have a valid Social Security number, pass a criminal background check, and be a U.S. citizen. Bilingual skills are highly desirable.

  • Field Supervisors $33 per hour
  • Recruiting Assistants $33 per hour
  • Census Takers $30 per hour
  • Office Staff $24–$31 per hour
