About Victor-Mario Zaballa
Born in Mexico City in 1954, Victor-Mario Zaballa cites early exposure to museums and music as formative experiences in his artistic life. Drawing from the rich history and symbolism of his Mexican heritage, Zaballa’s work merges the ancient and the modern. He integrates new materials and technology with traditions of altar making and folk-art regalia to forge a contemporary practice that synthesizes his diverse interests in art, science, spirituality, and social consciousness.
Zaballa is an established and prominent member of the San Francisco arts community. His public art projects include San Francisco’s BART Station at 16 & Mission Street, performances at Davies Symphony Hall, the Exploratorium, and New York’s Lincoln Center. In 2021, Zaballa’s work was featured at the SOMArts Cultural Center. He has also received awards for his traditional feather work and altar making.
